Scott shares his online stalking story |
|
Chatting online, walking home from school, taking
the bus, going out with friends - these are some of the activities
that are part of our daily lives. It is also during these innocent
activities, when we're least suspecting, that we're exposed
to the most danger. From being lured on the net to the possibility
of being followed, stalked, kidnapped, or the unimaginable,
we have to learn to keep our radars up and be smart. Being aware
of the things that are happening around us is so important.
I'm not saying we should live in paranoia, and most people are
pretty good and more than willing to help – but unfortunately,
there are a few that make this page necessary. Please take the
time to check out how to keep yourself safe on-line and on the
streets.
Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. And
if for any reason you ever need help, you can call Kids Help
Phone at 1-800-668-6868. Of course, if it’s an emergency
(and that includes being seriously threatened by bullies), call
911! |

Some tips to stay safe on the streets.
- Look confident. Walk with your head up, as if you know
where you are going. Keep your hands free - don't walk
about with them in your pockets.
- Stay alert. Leave your personal stereos off - they stop
you from being aware of what's going on around you. |
|
- Keep to well-used roads. Don't use
alleyways or short cuts.
- Walk against the flow of traffic.
- In the dark, always stick to well-lit areas.
- If you think you're being followed, cross the road.
If the person follows you, cross it again. If you are
still worried, go at once to a place where there are
lots of people, such as a busy shop, and tell someone
what's going on. If you can, choose a police officer;
if not, go to a family group rather than a single adult
and tell them. Always report this kind of thing to the
police, even if it's over. You won't be wasting police
time.
- Carry a whistle, or better still, a very noisy screech
or shrill alarm.
